Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu receives ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan

 Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, who arrived for a 5-day official visit to India, was accorded a ceremonial guard of honor at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday, October 7. Upon his arrival at Rashtrapati Bhavan, he was received by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Significantly, after the conclusion of the ceremonial welcome, President Droupadi Murmu and Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu also introduced each other to their respective country's ministers and delegation at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Additionally, the Maldivian President also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial at Rajghat. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh accompanied him to Rajghat.
EAM Jaishankar calls on Maldivian President

Earlier, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar called on Maldivian President Muizzu, as the latter reached New Delhi on an official bilateral visit. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the EAM shared the details of the discussions held during the meeting. He said, "Pleased to call on President Muizzu today at the start of his State Visit to India. Appreciate his commitment to enhance India-Maldives relationship. Confident that his talks with PM Narendra Modi tomorrow will give a new impetus to our friendly ties."
About the visit

Muizzu arrived on a five-day (6-10 October) state visit to New Delhi on Sunday. He had earlier visited India in June 2024 to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers. However, the present visit marked as his first bilateral visit to India.

Maldives President's Diplomatic U-turn, Special Appeal For Indian Tourists

 The Maldives will not act to undermine India's security and views New Delhi as a "valued partner and friend", and cooperation in several fields - including defence - will "always be a priority", President Mohamed Muizzu said Sunday as he arrived in the national capital for his first bilateral visit.

Mr Muizzu - seen by some as a 'pro-China' leader who ran his election campaign on an 'India Out' platform - told a national English daily Maldives' relationship with India is "built on respect and shared interests" and that Delhi has been, and is, one of his country's largest trade and development partners.

The Maldives leader met Prime Minister Narendra Modi this afternoon; he received a ceremonial welcome from President Droupadi Murmu and Mr Modi at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan.

"Maldives would never do anything to undermine security of India. While we enhance cooperation with other countries in various sectors, we remain committed to ensuring our actions do not compromise the security and stability of our region..." he told The Times of India in an extensive interview.

Mr Muizzu, while not naming China, also underlined his administration's resolve to "fostering growth and development through diverse international collaborations". He flagged his 'Maldives First' policy, saying "it is essential for the Maldives to diversify international relations and reduce over-dependence on any one country". However, he said that such engagements would not undermine India's interests.

"Respect for our neighbours and friends is embedded in our DNA," he said as he also called on Indian tourists to return. "Indians make a positive contribution... Indian tourists are welcome," he said, batting for his country's most important economic sector, which took a hit last year after the diplomatic row.

This is Mr Muizzu's first bilateral visit and the comments reflect growing bonhomie after a months-long diplomatic stand-off last year, over three Maldivian ministers' comments about Prime Minister Modi after a social media post about Lakshadweep as an alternate tourist destination to the Maldives.

The Maldives' Foreign Ministry distanced itself from the remarks and the ministers were suspended; two - Mariyam Shiuna and Malsha Shareef - resigned last month after the bilateral visit was confirmed.

And then the request in May - weeks before attending Mr Modi's swearing-in ceremony - to remove 90 military personnel deployed to three aviation platforms gifted by India - also raised eyebrows.

Delhi accepted the request and replaced military personnel with "competent technical" staff.

The ejection of Indian military personnel and an 'India Out' agenda was seen as one of Mr Muizzu's key poll promises. Pressed on these topics, the Maldives President said he "did what the people of Maldives asked of me", but stressed India remains a key partner in efforts to secure regional stability.

"This historic relationship is intertwined like the roots of a tree... built on centuries of exchange and values shared. The relationship between the Maldives and India has always been strong..."

Earlier Mr Muizzu denied having an 'India Out' agenda but insisted his country had a "serious problem" with the presence of foreign military on its soil. "The people of Maldives do not want a single foreign soldier in the country," news agency PTI quoted his comments to local website adhadhu.com.

Mr Muizzu also spoke about India-assisted infrastructure projects, like the Greater Male connectivity scheme and water and sewerage facilities for 28 islands in the archipelago.

The Maldives is one of India's key maritime neighbours in the Indian Ocean region and the overall bilateral ties, including in the areas of defence and security, witnessed an upward trajectory under the previous government led by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Tragedy strikes IAF event in Chennai – 5 dead, scores hospitalised as 12 lakh turn up

 

A day meant to mark a moment of national pride for the Indian Air Force (IAF) turned into a nightmare at Chennai’s Marina Beach, when a crowd of more than 12 lakh people surged toward exits, leaving five dead and many hospitalised.

The October 6 air show, held to commemorate the IAF’s 92nd anniversary, was the first such event in Chennai in over two decades. What was intended to be a spectacle of military aviation ended in chaos as the sheer size of the crowd overwhelmed both organisers and local authorities.

A senior police officer said that by late Sunday evening, five deaths had been confirmed and 40 people were in hospitals. “Over 150 people have received first aid in various parts of the city due to the dehydration and stress they faced. One death was reported on the beach, another near Napier Bridge. Other victims died on their way back home at different places. It was not a stampede situation at one particular place,” the officer said.

The event, widely publicised by both the IAF, attracted more than 12 lakh spectators to the sprawling Marina Beach. By 7 am, people had begun assembling at the two-kilometre stretch of coastline to secure vantage points for the 11.30 am to 1 pm air show.

Families, children, and the elderly arrived by trains, metros, buses, and private vehicles – thousands of four-wheelers and two-wheelers – eager to witness the show, which had even earned a spot in the Limca Book of Records for its unprecedented attendance.

However, when the event ended at 1 pm, the entire crowd attempted to leave the area at once. Traffic authorities were unprepared to manage the mass exodus, and soon, congestion built up around Marina Beach, paralysing movement for more than an hour.

Eyewitnesses reported panic among attendees as they found themselves trapped. “It was suffocating, we couldn’t move at all,” said Abhasree, who attended the show till the end.

Near Napier Bridge, Karthikeyan, 34, who came with family, suffered a fatal heart attack. Many who attended the show had experiences of dehydration and fainting, as temperatures soared to 36 degrees Celsius, with no provision for water or medical assistance readily available, attendees said.

Among the deceased were Srinivasan, 48, who died near Santhome after collapsing in a parking area; John Babu, 56, a former staff member of Omandurar hospital, who died while trying to retrieve his scooter from the hospital’s parking lot; and Dinesh, who was found unconscious near the shoreline. Each of these deaths occurred not in the throes of a stampede, but in the aftermath of mismanagement that led to people being stranded in overcrowded conditions for far too long.

While the state government had anticipated a large crowd – initial estimates predicted around 10 lakh people – the actual turnout exceeded even those expectations. The administration, which had made arrangements for crowd control, appeared woefully underprepared for the scale of the event.

The lack of adequate transportation added to the confusion, as Chennai Metro Rail Limited services proved insufficient to ferry the massive number of attendees. Crowds swelled not only at the beach but at train stations like Velachery and Government Estate, with photos and videos of the unprecedented crowd at these local stations going viral on social media.

The Chepauk Stadium, a venue next to the beach that regularly handles up to 40,000 people during cricket matches, is nearby. But the beach received more than 12 lakh spectators, with nowhere near the same level of planning or control.

As the crowd funneled through limited exits and narrow streets, desperate attendees sought refuge by cutting through nearby areas, including the Madras University campus on Kamaraj Salai. However, even these makeshift routes were not enough to stave off the chaos that ensued.

India's LCH Prachand "Beats" U.S. AH-64 Apache As Preferred Chopper For Indian Army For High-Altitude Ops

 The delayed Apache AH-64E attack helicopters are not the Indian Army’s first choice for high-altitude warfare. Instead, the indigenously developed Light Combat Helicopter ‘Prachand’ (Fierce) will be deployed in Ladakh along the China border in 2025.

Boeing’s Apache has been delayed for over six months. The first three helicopters are expected to be delivered by December 2024. The manufacturer has cited supply chain issues as the reason for the delay. The final delivery is likely to be made by early 2025.

The Apaches, also known as ‘tank killers,’ will be deployed in the deserts, where they are best suited for countering armor. The first Apache unit will be based at Nagtalao Army Base near Jodhpur.

The 451 Army Aviation squadron was raised at Nagtalao near Jodhpur on March 15, anticipating the arrival of the US-made helicopters. The helicopter base is fully ready to operate the Apaches. In 2020, the army ordered six Apache attack helicopters from the US for more than ₹4,100 crore.

Armed with fire-and-forget Hellfire missiles, the Apache can track up to 128 targets a minute and prioritize threats. The missiles equip the gunships with heavy anti-armor capabilities. The helicopters will help India strengthen its posture against Pakistan.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has already inducted Apache in its fleet. The IAF has deployed its Apache attack helicopters in Ladakh, which provided tactical support to the ground forces when needed. However, the helicopter’s operability on the upper reaches of the Himalayas has been questioned.

In 2024, an IAF helicopter was stranded at a high altitude for several months because it was proving difficult to bring the rotary-wing aircraft down. The IAF inducted the first batch of US-made Apache AH-64E at the Pathankot Air Force Station and the second one in Jorhat, Assam.

This is where the indigenous LCH will factor in. Prachand has a higher operational envelope as it is specifically designed for high-altitude conditions. “We have already tested the Apache helicopters in the operating conditions and have decided to deploy in the desert condition,” an Indian Army official told the EurAsian Times.

The Indian AH-64E Guardian version features a more powerful engine, better data networking, and improved composite rotor blades. Engine performance and load-carrying capacity (of helicopters or aircraft) decrease drastically at high altitudes. Flying at the limits of the aircraft requires the meticulous calculation of its ‘all-up weight.’ A few extra kilograms of cargo could have lethal consequences.

The US deployed Apaches over the mountains of Afghanistan in 2002, operating at around 12,500 feet above sea level, but the pilots were required to perform performance planning before each mission.

The LCH has demonstrated an ability to operate in these conditions. In 2015, an LCH conducted several test landings on the Siachen glacier in Ladakh at altitudes up to 15,800 feet while carrying a modest 500-kilogram (1,102-pound) load.

The Defence Acquisition Council has already approved the procurement of 156 LCH at an estimated cost of ₹45,000 crore ($5.5B), 90 for the Army and 66 for the IAF. These are in addition to the 15 limited series production LCH being procured — 10 for IAF and five for the Army — at a cost of ₹4,264 crore. In addition to the LCH, the Army operates 75 Rudra helicopters, the armed version of the advanced light helicopter.
How Does LCH Stack Up Against Apache?

Both the Boeing AH-64 Apache and the HAL’s LCH are two-seat multi-role attack helicopters. There is not much difference between the two choppers in terms of weight. The Apache is 3,148 kilos lighter than the LCH.

The LCH is powered by two Shakti turboshaft engines with 1,430 horsepower each. The Boeing Apache helicopter is powered by 2 General Electric T700 GE 701C turboshaft engines capable of delivering 1,890 horsepower each. The powerful engines of Apaches allow them to achieve a top speed of 295 kph while the maximum speed of LCH is 280 kph.

LCH has another advantage over Apaches – that of endurance. It can tail a target for up to 700 kilometers while flying at a height of 6,500 meters. The Apache only has a range of 480 kilometers and can reach a ceiling of 6,400 meters.

LCH Prachand’s engines are produced in collaboration between HAL and France’s Safran company. It can operate at the world’s highest battleground – the Siachen Glacier.

The weapon complement includes a 20mm nose gun in the front, capable of firing 800 rounds per minute from a range of up to 2 km. A 70mm rocket pod is mounted on the stub wing, with a direct firing range of up to 4 km and indirect up to 8 km.

Above the gun is an electro-optical pod for long-range day and night surveillance and target tracking. Anti-tank guided missile ‘Dhruvastra’ and French air-to-air missile ‘Mistral-2’ have a maximum interception range of 6.5 km.

Indian LCH can also be deployed in various roles, including tracking slow-moving aerial targets, insurgency, destroying enemy defenses, search and rescue, anti-tank, and scouting.

The Army is looking for another 95 LCH and the IAF another 65. However, the contract has yet to be worked out, and their induction is spread over the next 10-15 years. The Indian Army plans to eventually deploy 70 of its LCH in the mountains.

Wing Commander Saurabh Sharma, who is also the Flight Commander of Dhanush Squadron 143 Helicopter Unit, which operates these helicopters, described his experience flying the machines: “To quote a famous boxer, Mohammed Ali, all I can say is this machine flies like a butterfly and stings like a bee.”

3 Spectators Die After Air Force's Chennai Airshow

 At least three spectators who had come to watch the Indian Air Force's air show in Chennai died after the show, a senior police officer confirmed to NDTV. One of them, sources said, was dead by the time he was taken to the Royapettah Government Hospital.

Another man had reportedly suffered a sun stroke while he was riding his bike. The biker was on the stretch connecting Gosha Hospital and Wallajah Road and was stuck in traffic for more than an hour.

"Volunteers even identified his condition as he was losing control amid the stranded crowd and helped him get off the bike," an eyewitness told NDTV.

A senior medical officer said, "Only after the postmortem examination we will be able to identify the cause of death".

Questions are being raised over the Indian Air Force aggressively pushing this event to set a Limca Book of World Record by aiming to mobilise 15 lakh spectators -- much beyond manageable -- and the Chennai City Police's poor crowd and traffic management.

Everything had been going smoothly ahead of the event, with largescale traffic diversion and parking regulations. But closer to the air show -- scheduled at 11 am -- the crowd got so large that the elevated MRTS railway stations along the Marina Beach road had turned into a sea of people.

Chaos broke out after the event when the entire crowd started to disperse. Every inch of the space on the Beach road appeared occupied.

There was no adequate arrangement for drinking water in the spectators' area. With temperature soaring and no public transport, hundreds had to walk three to four kilometres on the jam-packed roads to get any public conveyance or pick up their vehicles.

Many - children among them -- just sat on the sidewalk tired and dehydrated. Many were seen attending to fainted or weary individuals.

With no effective police regulation on the ground, vehicles and two wheelers haphazardly entered both ways and remained stuck for more than two hours on most roads.

Many police personnel were busy returning on their two wheelers, turning into mute spectators. They  neither regulated the situation nor intervened to help stranded  ambulances until there was public uproar.

There was no drinking water stations along the roads. Most eateries on these stretches were shut and shops that were open ran out of water and soft drinks soon.

A mother who had brought her  two children said "The state government has failed us. No proper arrangements at all either at the venue or on the roads"

The Chennai police had deployed 6,500 police personnel and 1,500 home guards for security.

It is not clear if the Tamil Nadu government -- which has a culture of objecting to mass gatherings citing security concerns -- had expressed its concern to the Air Force and advised against hyping the show.

Health Minister Ma Subramanian said in a statement the state Chief Secretary had presided over a coordination meeting with IAF and other officials had held several meetings. "Arrangements were made keeping in mind IAF's demands. The Chennai Corporation and Metro Water too had made adequate temporary toilets and drinking water arrangements," he said.

Another note with no attribution claimed "No one dead in the crowd. No death is related to crowd or mismanagement".

The air show had included a show by the Special Garud Force commandos in a simulated rescue operation and in freeing the hostage. It also showcased 72 aircraft, including Rafale, indigenously manufactured state-of-the-art Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, Light Combat helicopter Prachand, and Heritage aircraft Dakota.

Hate speech case against Hindu seer for remarks against Prophet Muhammad

The Hyderabad Police on Saturday filed a case against Yati Narsinghanand, head priest of a temple in Uttar Pradesh, after a complaint was registered by the Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM over the former's alleged derogatory remarks against the Prophet Muhammad.

The First Information Report (FIR) was registered by the Cyber Crime police station of the city police under relevant sections of the IT Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

A copy of the complaint and FIR was posted by Owaisi on his official social media handle.

Earlier today, Owaisi, along with his party workers, lodged a complaint agianst the seer and sought his immediate arrest.

"Copy of the complaint and FIR against the hate speech. We also requested @CPHydCity to also send a Notice to social media platforms to remove this hate speech," Owaisi posted along with the copy of the FIR on X.

Protests erupted in the old city against the controversial Hindutva leader, as AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi met with Police Commissioner CV Anand to escalate his party's complaint. Owaisi later informed reporters that the matter had been referred to the cyber cell for further investigation.

According to Anand, social media platforms will be alerted, following standard procedures, to remove any objectionable content. Owaisi highlighted that Yati Narsinghanand, previously jailed for hate speech, had a bail condition prohibiting him from making similar remarks.

"AIMIM is demanding that Yati Narsinghanand’s bail be revoked," Owaisi said, adding that the comments cited in their complaint clearly constitute hate speech.

In the complaint, AIMIM referred to some of the remarks allegedly made by Yati Narsinghanand, stating that such comments amount to hate speech.

Citing a Supreme Court ruling, Owaisi stated that suo motu action should be taken whenever someone makes a hate speech.

The BJP's overall performance in the Valley, which has 47 seats, is expected to remain poor, as it failed to secure any seats in the 2014 election, though it may finally open its account this time. Meanwhile, the party is likely to maintain its stronghold in Jammu, securing 27-31 seats out of the total 43, according to the CVoter exit poll shown by India Today.

While these numbers bring good news for Farooq Abdullah’s National Conference and the Congress, it hit the BJP's dreams. Despite the central government’s rhetoric of transforming the region into a ‘Naya Kashmir’ over the past five years, focusing on peace, development, and prosperity, the 'change' did not translate into votes for the saffron party.

This raises the question, why didn’t this ‘Naya Kashmir’ vision convert into electoral gains for the BJP, which has worked hard to expand its presence and strengthen its cadre in the Valley, while also forging alliances with parties like Syed Altaf Bukhari’s Apni Party and Sajjad Lone’s Peoples Conference.

A stronger performance in the Valley was crucial for the BJP’s ambitions of getting its first Chief Minister in Jammu and Kashmir. However, nothing seems to have worked for them in the region. The first signs of this were evident during the Lok Sabha elections when the BJP failed to contest any of the three parliamentary segments in the Valley. To many, this was seen as an acknowledgement of the party’s inability to achieve its mission in Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370.

    Failure to convince people that Article 370 was a bane, not a matter of dignity

When the central government abrogated Article 370 in August 2019, stripping Jammu and Kashmir of its special status and splitting it into Union Territories, the region was placed under unprecedented restrictions for several months. As the situation began to normalise, the Narendra Modi government put forth its narrative for a ‘Naya Kashmir’, with promises of development, jobs, and security. However, little was done to address the sense of loss felt by the people over the removal of their special status.

Meanwhile, regional parties like the National Conference (NC) and Mehbooba Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) tapped into the ‘dignity’ factor, framing the move as anti-Kashmir and painting the BJP as anti-Kashmiri, a sentiment that has remained alive in spite of peace, developmental push of the BJP.

    Fallout of heavy-handed anti-separatist approach

The BJP’s ‘Naya Kashmir’ security strategy involved a policy of collective responsibility and punishment, which has led to public discontent. While firm actions against terrorism, separatism, and stone-pelting were welcomed, many residents felt that the right to free speech was being suppressed. The widespread perception that fear is being used to curb dissent has limited the BJP's ability to gain electoral traction in the Valley.

    Gap between promises and action on jobs and investments

After Kashmir was made a Union Territory, the BJP promised a wave of developmental projects, including job creation through massive investments, targeting the region’s large number of educated but unemployed youth. However, the lack of significant progress on these critical issues has fostered a sense of frustration and betrayal among the people.

    Allies in Kashmir fail to deliver

As part of its electoral strategy, the BJP sought to expand beyond the traditional dominance of the NC and PDP by forging alliances with newer parties, such as the Apni Party and the People's Conference. However, years of investment in these alliances did not bear fruit, as these parties failed to emerge as strong political forces capable of challenging the established players like the NC or PDP.

The Congress-National Conference alliance is projected to win 40-48 out of the 90 Assembly seats, according to the CVoter exit poll. While the BJP is expected to secure 27-32 seats, the Mehbooba Mufti-led People's Democratic Party (PDP) may win 6-12 seats. Other parties and independent candidates could take 6-11 seats.
